Why Bring It Up If Our Kid Seems Okay: Talking About Race in Your Transracial Adoptive Family
February 23, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
It can be easy to miss the lack of racial diversity in Austin… until bringing home a child of color. The “cultural liberalism and sophistication,” as quoted by Cecilia Ballí, often mask the city’s history of racial zoning and segregation. In the South, people tend to follow the cultural norm of not talking about “ugly” (read: uncomfortable) things, but when parenting a child of color, necessity forces people out of their comfort zones. This workshop will provide a safe space to dissect White privilege and White fragility. You will learn tools for examining your own racial biases and broaching the topic of race with your transracially adopted child. You will also learn strategies for addressing racism in your day-to-day lives and ways to be an ally for your child of color. This workshop will feature a panel of adult transracial adoptees.
This workshop will be presented by Janie Cravens, LMSW-ACP and transracial adoptee Erin Smith.
Cost: $75/individual or $100/couple
