We have built our lives together around unencumbered wonder and unconditional love, and we are thrilled to bring a child into our family. We currently live in Memphis, TN with family and friends in Houston, Austin, and Central Louisiana. We have four dogs, three cats, and a large, tree-filled yard awaiting a child’s running feet.
Katelyn is a Montessori teacher in a public school in Memphis and plays the cello. She loves to sew on her vintage Singer sewing machine and get her hands dirty in the herb and vegetable garden. Mallory works in healthcare and is currently in school to be a chaplain. She loves to bake gooey cinnamon rolls and to find the perfect place to hang her hammock in the woods so that she can write poetry and commune with the earth. We met through some mutual friends and have been enamored with each other ever since. Katelyn has taught Mallory how to live in wonder and how to be curious about what the world has to offer. Mallory has taught Katelyn how to be grounded in herself and about the deeply spiritual essence of the universe.
ABOUT US
PETS
We have three cats and four dogs, who are all rescues. They each have their little quirks that make them loveable. Our Yorkie, Denver, rolls on his back next to your feet so you can rub his belly, no matter where you are or what you’re doing. Our most recent rescue cat, Wynken, plops his body on yours and nuzzles your face for his cuddles. Charlie, our lab, is the steady one of the group who calms all their anxieties and makes everyone feel at home. They are all great with children and need someone to run and play with.
OUR HOME
We live in a 3 bed/2 bath home on three acres and surrounded by woods. It’s near Shelby Forest State Park, which has plenty of opportunities for hiking and nature exploration. Our home is right down the road from Mallory’s parents’ house, where we spend a lot of time with family. Inside our home we have a rock fireplace that runs up to the lofted ceilings and a wood-burning stove to keep us warm in the winters. The large deck in the back is great for birdwatching, sipping coffee (and juice), and watching the kids as they run through the trees and over the hills.
PARENTING PHILOSOPHY
We believe in attachment parenting to help children believe in our love and their own abilities, to help them build healthy relationships, and to teach them how to think critically about the world. We want to foster independence, wonder, love, and kindness in our child. We will be available for whatever they may need to help them accomplish what they are setting out to do. We want to let them explore and engage their curiosities but also create limits and outline boundaries to keep them safe.
OUR EXTENDED FAMILY
We have family in Houston, Louisiana, and Memphis. Katelyn’s family lives in Louisiana, and this child will be the first grandbaby on that side of the family. They are excited to have a grandchild so that they can share the fresh flowers and vegetables growing in their gardens and show them what birds are flying through and making homes in their yards. Mallory’s family lives in Memphis, where our four nieces and nephews live. They run in the fields picking honeysuckle or ride the ATV to see the cows on the farm. They are curious and headstrong and full of wonder, kindness, and love. Three of them are also adopted and can’t wait to have cousins who share their story!
TRAVELS
We love to experience new foods, cultures, and people! We took a dream trip in 2019 to Lisbon, Portugal where we walked the cobblestones, visited centuries-old monasteries, ate some of the best meals we’ve ever eaten, and woke up to the sun rising over the Lisboa castle each morning. Earlier in her life, Mallory lived in Senegal, West Africa for two years and Scotland for four months, and has traveled to Mexico, Kenya, Germany, Czech Republic, Greece, Nicaragua, the Bahamas, the Grand Cayman Islands, and Canada. Katelyn spent extended time in an intentional community in Vancouver, Canada for two summers and has traveled to national parks and taken long road trips across the country. Our next dream is to spend a few weeks in Italy for some authentic pasta. We hope we get to bring a little one along on that journey and all the others to come!
More About MALLORY
When I grew up I wanted to be a teacher.
I am really good at sleeping, writing, and doing laundry.
I am terrible at singing. I can carry a tune in a bucket, I just can’t pour it out.
My favorite quote is “To live in this world
you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it
against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.”
– Mary Oliver
My best mom joke is Anything with a cat pun, and I am not kitten you about that. They’re the purrfect jokes.
I realized I was no longer cool when I made a cat pun joke.
